Final victories occurred while flying a P-51D named American Beauty during a solo flight after experiencing electrical problems during an escort mission to Munich and left the formation on November 16, 1944. On the return trip, he spotted a Ju-88 over Udine, Italy. While chasing the German aircraft, he was jumped by twelve Me-109s and FW-190s. He dispatched the Ju-88 and went on to destroy two FW-109s, one Me-109, two probables and two damaged. After this battle, John was sent to China as a headquarters staff officer in the China-American Composite Wing. John was the third highest scoring Mustang ace of World War II and the top U.S.A.A.F. ace of the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations.
